I like to think everyone is welcome here. Skunks, Apossum, Raccoons(not often that we see them) as well as the usual bird life, including our two Mallards. Sometimes though we do get some unusual birds come in for a short period of time. I am just hoping that the Oriels come in this May with the Rose Breasted Grosbeak that we saw for the first time last year.
This little beauty is a Yellow rumped Warbler. I have never seen one in my garden.

Nelly and Nigel come every day, they come when I call them because they know they will get food. Yes I give them bread as a treat but have seeds and nuts and fruit on the ground along with water for them. We put out raw veggies too for them and bunnies who may like them.

A handsome couple I must say. Nigel is a good husband and keeps Nelly safe. She loves the small pond we have and all the critters drink from it. I have bird baths at the normal level for birds. Small dishes for bees and one large tray under the feeder where I put the ground food.
Nelly has claimed it and was washing herself in it this morning so I had to go clean it out.
Nigel doesn't like the Crow getting near Nelly otherwise they get along and they have different feeding stations.
Yesterday was Bunny day.

They were chasing each other around, I suppose one may be a male and one female but who knows. Please bring me baby bunnies and I will put some lettuce out to grow for you. I also have carrots. There was at the same time the big bunny who somehow gets through the fences (jumps) and gets the food outside. Someone enjoyed the Banana I put out and nibbled on the 1/2 apple. I now have oranges and grape jelly (jam) out for the Oriels when they come.
The Chipmunk has not been around in a couple of days but they are also constant visitors. No cats here now so they are safe. They are also greedy.
The Squirrels look like young ones they are smaller than the usual ones. Those I could do without. They have invaded our eves out front and we have Starlings out back nesting over the back door in the eves. Gerry thought he had it blocked off but nope. I wish she would sweep up after herself. The nesting materials fall on the back porch.

Well I must say it's rather like a farm in it's way. I clean up after animals but ya know what, kids are worse.

We didn't get the leaves cleaned up last Autumn so a real mess come Spring. I need the exercize and it feels good to be active again. I finished raking the back and finished the side. Today I got half of the front done. Tristen has been very helpful. He likes to use the leaf blower, any equipment and he's all for it. I like the rake. More exercize and I use the broom rather than the noise of the blower.
The front garden has some Daffodils coming through so that will have to be blown rather than raked. So I hope Gerry will do that for me.

I covered a lot of the space on the side with wood chips, it had the wild lillies on it and was a mess. SO I moved the bottle bush and a plough in that area and when its time for flowers I will brighten it up a bit with those.

Everything looks so bland this time of year. When I am done with the raking and dead heading I will get my glass balls and stuff out. The side of the front will have a sidewalk put in this July so all the fencing must come down. (out back too) We won't do that till closer to the time though. Meanwhile I must do what I can. This time of year is mainly planning and clean up but it's good to see things coming through

I have potted any small pine that I find growing and nurse them in a pot until they get big enough to plant. Gerry doesn't like that idea but he won't see what I do anyway. I like the pines for some privacy. I will also see if by keeping them in a pot they will stay small.

The tiny trees come from the pine cones and deserve a life. Some come up from the Apple tree too but so far those have got raked away.
The back is now just waiting for the "Dairy Doo" and fertilizing. I need to get that soon and spread it so that everything comes in nice. I am seeing Hyacynth coming up and Daffs. Last year none of the Daffodils bloomed. I covered the Tulips so the Squirrels or Rabbits don't get them. I think I will pot some tomorrow from the side of the house near Bud and bring them inside.

Some of my ornaments had to be sprayed and repainted but all thats done now. Time to get the rest out.
The pond has to be cleaned and I feel so bad for my one fish. It needs some friends, today it was next to the ball it used to play with. So sad.
Then we have the ducks who have taken over and become demanding, They hang out most days, my live ornaments

So the rest is for another day. I see the garden places are beginning to open and they have Pansies. I may just get some for the deck. I did buy some seeds and will throw those around and see what happens.

We have a pair of Mallards who come every day. They wait for me to see them and expect me to provide treats. Last year they were a lot more shy, this year not so much. They have got used to me apparently. They came into the drive and up to the gate as I threw them some bread. I named them Nelly and Nigel.
So yesterday I was working in the garden trying to clean up around the deck. A lot of Winter accumulation of bird seed and veggies around there now the snow has melted. Well apparently they might still want that because they both came and supervised. I left them to it and went and got some corn and seeds and put that under the bird feeder in hopes of distracting them. Nelly went in the pond and Nigel ate the corn.

Nigel is such a handsome fella and he takes good care of Nelly. She will languish in the pond or take a nap and he stands guard. Well then there's a crow, actually a couple of Crows who come around. I had thrown out some bread for them all. The Crow got a bit that was rather stale and wanted to dunk it in the pond. Nigel said no.

Its fun to watch the interaction. Crows seem to be quite timid.
Nelly is very comfortable here and after her bath she takes a nap. When the coast is clear he will relax.

Just recently there seems to be little in the way of bird activity. I have no idea why except maybe nesting time. I am hoping that they come back soon. The best thing we did was moving our bird feeder and putting the Squirrel baffle on it. It has kept down the Squirrel population. Still a couple of them come around but not like before.

Today the Crow was really brave. I missed him in the bird bath but he came on the deck for bread. So then I got my camera and watched the interaction between him and Nigel. Nigel is the boss. He shood off the Crow because Nelly was in the pond again.

Can you make out Nigel with beak open wide and Crow is flying away.
The Possum has changed shedule apparently. I leave food and its gone by morning but has not been around for me to see. Could be someone else but in any case I haven't seen them. The bear from last year who was visiting Meijers parking lot is back, he's running around the surrounding neighbourhoods but has elluded the live traps so far. hahahahah...........wish he would come this way. I have plenty of food for him. When they get used to people though the DNR removes them to woodlands far away from people if possible.

I have to put out flowers next but that means finding a basket and then waiting til I can get live plants.
Nigel and Nelly have been regular visitors. Nigel is so handsome. They are there now cleaning up the corn and stuff thawing out by the deck. They saw me throw out bread for the Possum and the rabbits have greens tonight. Last night they had Tristens left over snacks of pretzels, marshmallow and popcorn. Some fried eggs and nuts. I take care of my critters, we are told not to feed bread but they love it, all of them do so hey, it fills their tummies.

I was standing at the back door today and I swore I saw Snowdrops in the garden. It was quite a distance but sure enough it certainly was. I can't believe I see so well at a distance but cant see stuff right in front of me.........ah well. It is what it is.
So then I had a look around to see what showing. Quite a few things coming up. I am wondering if the Hosta that Jo gave me last year have made it, I took the dead stuff out and just tips are showing in some pots. The stuff in the ground take much longer to show up. Iris are breaking ground. I didn't rake the leaves off the gardens, it's too soon, we may yet get snow. In fact it's probably guaranteed but at least I am getting and early start.

It looks rather barren but as soon as it rains it will green up. I took out the poodle paths, those patio blocks because I needed something under the big bird feeder. That side garden will be getting a complete overhaul because we have to take down the fences for the side walk this summer. Saved me buying blocks, the center I will fill with stone. It will keep it a bit tidier as the seeds fall there.

We pulled out the plough that was tucked into the side garden in back. With the fence coming down I can fix up things in the back and use the old fences now to make the back garden completely seperate. RIght now I have old wrought iron in there but its still see through, using the trellis fencing like the swings, arches, it will completely seperate. I like that. Have then a secret garden back there and will work more to make it special. Out front the black iron fences have to come down too so before anything grows back I will fill in the area under the Pine with wood chips and move the two ploughs out there. They came from Justin and Carries house in the UP. If I don't get there soon the old lillies will come up and they are just a mess, and never bloom.

My shrubs are growing well out there so I hope the side walk construction doesn't damage the stuff I want to keep. Anyway just a few things from today. I am trying to pace myself because my body sure hurts when I am done and so much yet to do. When I get a rainy day I will paint the outside wood ornaments and spray them before putting them out. My table is covered. Fabric, sewing machine, knitting and paint stuff. It never ends, and will never be a real dining room.

This Winter was a mild one and we had a lot of visitors. Not so many birds as usual but a few constant critters came and went. One was a very pretty Skunk who came several times until it met the Poodles. Then it decided to either come after we were in bed or found better yummies.

This was a rather lovely Skunk with a lot of white on his tail and body. Skunks are one of my favourites and can make good pets.
The other nightly visitor was a Possum. In actual fact I believe there were more than one. The original was a fat one and was brownish rather than grey. The other had a white face and was smaller and grey. They were both beautiful and I adore their little hands. Certainly leave distinctiver tracks in the snow. I see they go under the deck to hide but mostly they run for the garage.

I did take some video of them all but not sure yet about getting it on here so will wait. The third visitor, well often more than one was a rabbit. A big bunny. I am hoping everyone brings me babies come Spring

I read up on Possum's and find they only live a couple of years. How sad. They have quite a few babies each year and carry them in a pouch. Our only Marsupial apparently. They eat ticks and fleas and bugs and other pesky things. So they are very beneficial. Mine like cheese and hamburgher and is very well fed.
My Crow was a constant visitor and enjoys a wide variety of foods. This winter was rather mild and so he didn't come as close as other years
'
In the Fall I brought in some of my plants to try to over Winter, but they didn't do well. Last year I put them in Tristen's room because he wasn't staying here that often. This year things changed and he is here every weekend so I put the plants downstairs, They just didn't do well, not enough light. I think maybe a couple of the Geraniums will make it and a couple of others. Next year I am not sure it will be worth the hassle.
I should add that we also had a house guest.

Anyway, Spring will soon be here and I will be able to get outside and be more active. I hope............Gerry did our front porch up last year and that will be like an extra room to go sit in and be outside. I can put fans out there and it will be out of the sun. I will put some bird feeders out there and spend more time there, we have never been front porch sitters. Now it's private and the Poodles can come and go as they please. I love leaving the doors open, yes an odd fly or something comes in and yes we have air conditioning running but hey, I like air con and fresh air. All for now. We have a wonderful tree right next to us that Bud planted years ago. Its a copper colour all year but in the Autumn it outdoes itself
All my plants are inside that are coming in. Well except for two or 3 Boston Ferns. Still deciding on those. I saw one neighbour had put all hers (still beautiful), on the curb for collection. So sad. Still, they really don't do well in the house. I just don't like to see them die. You never know, maybe I can cut them back and feed them well around March and have better results.............There is actually not much going on in the garden now. Gerry got a lot of the raking done but still loads to do.
I need to get some bird food soon. I have cleaned the feeders and thrown all the old stuff out for the squirrels. Soon the birds will be expecting them to be full again.
I hope some different birds will come in.
I can't wait for gerry to get the front porch finished so the dogs can go out the front door. Right now they go on the back deck but with Winter coming so comes the critters. Do not wish for them to meet a skunk or anyone else that we welcome here. I have a feeling he is procrastinating and then it will snow and he won't want to do it. So I must nag, sigh. Not much going on out there right now so
not a lot to talk about. All for now.Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-22415720971873245592019-10-07T19:34:00.001-04:002019-10-07T19:34:58.702-04:00Autumn.............Finally some beautiful, sunny days that are cooler, warm enough but not humid. So.......everyone is lined up on the deck close to the house just in case we get frost. The growing season is over so we wont be getting any warnings. Tomorrow Gerry has to work and so I will go get some pots to use to bring in those who need to be repotted. I have to get the bedroom ready for them. I am wondering if I should try to bring in the Boston Ferns, I have done so other years but without a lot of success. They pick up by the end of the year when taken back outside but is it worth the space? The Geraniums take time as well but at least they look OK before they bloom.

Some cuttings from the Coleus and Fuchsia they look pretty in the kitchen window for now. They will root or not, up to them.

I brought this one in too, I repotted it in the Spring when I put it outside. It has doubled in size so I had to put it somewhere else this year and hope it likes it's new spot.

Unfortunately the Angel is stuck on one of the branches so will have to sit with the fairy.
We sat outside in the sun for a while this afternoon. In between I brought in the rest of the garden stuff. I trimmed a few shrubs out back and moved a few things around. Gerry salvaged a couple of logs when the city cut down a tree out front. I am not sure what I will do with them but they had to be moved from where he dumped them out front. I had thought of making a garden seat. That will remain to be seen, if nothing else they will make great plant stands.
I had him move the small pine tree from the driveway out to the front under the big pines. It can go in the ground next Spring maybe in between the two large trees.

For some reason the pines are not doing well. The lower branches are dying off. I like the area to remain thick because the birds and rabbits enjoy them. In the Spring I will buy some evergreen shrubs to fill in I think. For now those two little trees can Winter there.

Gerry moved the first one by mistake but I like it there and moved it to replace the pot of grass that sat in that spot. It has left a bare spot on the grass but will make it easier to work on the garden in the Spring. I hope I have the energy to really work the garden well in the Spring and get it in better shape. I may put the little stone bench there again as it once was.

The back corner will need some attention too come Spring. If I go to the store for pots I will see if they have any Asters. I like planning in my mind and have thought of a path to go back there as I have in other areas with some stepping stones and wood chips. The things already growing have come on their own (the Holly) and from things taken from other places. I think I can pretty it up next year. I have a lot of things to move. I can't spend a lot of money and will have to be resourceful.

Showing this picture again because I do believe that is a spider plant. It's in a big pot, rather too big to bring inside. I would like to save it and the other one in front of it. Those grasses I found did not do well over winter last year. Its so expensive to replace everything every year. The room inside the house is so limited but I do have the bedroom upstairs and now Tristen is not here as often I can keep some there. I do wish I had a good place for them where I would remember to water them haha. I must do some research.
I did prune a couple of roses back and cut some of the smaller shrubs. So much to do in Springtime though, roll on SPring?????
Time to get things inside before the first frosts hit us. It has been wet or too hot, or humid. Just not garden weather at least for me. I could imagine my Dad being out in Wellies and rain coat but not me, I am not that dedicated. I live in hope that Winter kills the weeds and I can get out digging early enough to get things done in the Spring. I would like to at least trim back the shrubs though...........but the big job now is getting the Geraniums repotted and brought inside. I wasn't going to but they look too nice to just let them die. True they are then late blooming but ah well.

The Geraniums are so pretty after the rain.

There are several house plants that must come in. The problem is where to put them.

I also want these to come in as they did so well last year inside. Then I need to repot some cuttings from a couple more I have my potting soil now so I can start that project. I like plants that can be reproduced to give more.

Then there's about 4 Spider plants out there that need to be repotted and brought inside. No idea where everything will go at this point. I had a look around the garden to get some ideas for next year. My Pine trees have a lot of dead branches on the lower parts
I liked them when they were bushy because I know the rabbits love it under there. SO I think I will extend that area and remove the Day lilies and replace them with a row of evergreen shrubs. The lilies will do better in the garden anyway. So roll on Spring haha.We need to do something with the grass too its all weeds and moss out front. I better start saving now haha.

Pull stuff out and do as much as I can without spending too much in doing it. Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-76141521636555800542019-08-27T13:50:00.000-04:002019-08-27T13:50:08.479-04:00Rain................We got just a little rain yesterday, not enough to help really. The leaves are falling without changing colour. The oaks coming down in chunks. I bet that's the squirrels. I need to gather the acorns if we have any this year. The Mountain ash is heavy with berries and the Robins are feasting.

It must be time to fill the feeders because I had two visitors looking for food. I kept them empty to keep the Squirrels away but maybe it's time. I will have to go shopping.

I don't want to discourage the birds but at the moment the cats are enjoying the outside especially since I found some new cushions. I stopped at a yard sale the other day quite by chance. I found 12 seat cushions at a dollar each. So I have replaced all mine. What a deal. Now they all match except the Shade garden ones but now they too have a set of the old ones that at least match. Woo hoo, what a deal.

I finally got Gerry to paint the old wooden bench and a stool for me. So with the new cushions it looks quite nice, the cats seem to think so. So I moved things around a bit and put the bench up by the back door. If it ever cools down I can sit out there again.
The two chairs are back together again and its better than the bench being there.

The patios new cushions and the Shade gardens too

It will almost be time to start to bring in plants to Winter over. I am not sure what I want to bring in this year but most certainly will bring in the Geraniums.

I usually bring in the ferns but it takes them all summer to recover and are not that expensive. They are very messy house plants. Its just such a shame to lose them all though. BUT it's not worth it. I must bring in my usual two house plants that usually sit in the kitchen window but, they are bigger now so I may try them in the dining room instead. Several of my African Violets have died off.

The front porch is painted and still needs the rail. I bet Gerry will put that off as long as he can. He is working with Tim for awhile which will at least give him a bit of extra money, but no doubt that will go on bills. Still I can hope. I really want to be able to let the dogs out the front this winter.

Time to begin sewing for the change for the Autumn......if I can do it in time haha. Probably have to go straight to Winter haha. Well actually I am pretty sure I have enough Christmas fabric to do that by then at least. Meanwhile if I can get Gerry to clean up his mess in the garage maybe I can find my Autumn decorations. I can do that this weekend. Hardly any activity in the garden. Just a few braved the heat.
The weeds are doing well though. Today I swept the path out back and its all such a mess. I think I will go around with the wheel barrow tomorrow before it gets hot and pull some of the purple bell flowers that spread like crazy before they drop seeds and also the Tiger lily's. They are ungainly and I can do without those. There are also some wild flowers that ended up being really straggly, they need more light so they can go. Lots to do. Not a lot of satisfaction at this time of year but I have dirt to spread and several other clean up jobs. I think I will try a spray bottle with a mix of vinegar and salt again to get rid of weeds between stones. It worked before so maybe that will stop them coming back in Spring.
There is no lawn, its all weeds. The lawnmower broke and cant afford a new one. We have a hand mower, you know the old type of push mower that does a hack job. At least it does when Gerry does it. (thats not me)

He seldom does the trim so when I get out I hand pull the edges. Right now the flowers/weeds that I grow that like to spread are having a grand old time frolicking all over the place.

They have no manners and spread to other gardens too. Funny thing is they would do wonderful in a wild garden, but then mine is fast becoming one.
The Geraniums that I overwintered have come into their own. The ones that did not look very well have perked up and now I have nice mix of colours. I will bring them in again.

The Boston fern that I had left that about died is also back and looking good. I've 4 this year. 3 new ones. I think what I'll do with those is cut them back when I bring them in. See how that works. I hate to see things die.
The "rose garden" did well this year and I'd planted some daisies there and even the lavender did OK. So I'm happy with that. All my roses bloomed to some extent and that's nice. I will try to prune them this year if I get a chance. I long for a nice long cool Autumn. At least get the leaves out of the way this year. Way too much work come Spring.
You can see the subtle change in things as it slides into a different season. The berries on the Mountain Ash are just turning red, seems it only just blossomed. Soon be time to fill bird feeders again. So much to do before then. The Ferns I pulled have replaced themselves but I will pull some more and plant in the back under the Pines. That's the plan but will it get done I wonder?
It has been a horrible summer for me. I feel more of cabin fever than I did in Winter. I can't tolerate the heat and humidity. The Day lillies are holding up their end of the deal, always a favourite. Hostas blooming and I have some to put in the garden too.
Always some new ones. Although the ones I got this year are long over with. Next year though they'll be awesome.
Soon the leaves will begin to hint at changing. September is usually a nice month and begins the change. Sometimes a dust of snow and the first frosts happen depending on the year. Maybe it'll be a long cool but not freezing Fall.
I gave up on the side garden for now. Gerry is working on the front porch. I will have to take out all my pretty stones and wash and replace them Maybe even cover them when the leaves start to fall. Trim the Forsythia and weed the new garden well so come Spring I can plant it. I can always hope.Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-74945346299009833972019-07-23T23:23:00.002-04:002019-07-23T23:23:32.976-04:00My favourite rose.......I was not going out into the garden today, but I did. I was glad I did because my favourite rose was blooming. I wish I had seen her yesterday before she was fully out. The Peace Rose, my Dad's favourite and so it is mine also. So much meaning to her. At least for us and it is the most popular rose ever.

One day earlier and the blush of colour would be more prominent.
I love my new rose also. Its a very pale pink. I do not yet know her name but think I may have the ticket. I love pale pink roses.
My favourite Day lilly also bloomed today. I love all of them but this one is so pure and pretty.

Some of my new "daisies" that were planted and did nothing last year bloomed and hey my Lavender is still growing. I think I may have found the right spot. If this cooler weather stays for a few days I may get a few things done. I did pull a few weeds today but need a shovel to have a go at it.

The Bee Balm is blooming and has spread. I did plant some new ones but those were done early. I hope they all seed themselves. I may go to the garden center and see if they have any sales.

I tried to pull a few weeds, make enough space to put my hens. I will go out tomorrow and maybe try to pull a few more with a hand trowel. The Herbs need to be cut back. They have gone to seed.

The Hydrangeas that Jo gave me are spreading under the Burning bush. They die back every year but fill in the background.
This is the bell flower that I like, but it's spreading all over the whole gardens. I should pull it while it's in flower so that it doesn't spread more that it does.

Well maybe if I can get some weeding done I will take some "after" pictures. Tomorrow we take the girl to the Groomers, they are so cute right now but so hot. Poor babies. Maybe some after pictures of them also.Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-89902401224455293762019-07-22T22:29:00.000-04:002019-07-22T22:29:52.490-04:00Hot and Humid........Its hot, its humid and I am staying out of the garden. I did try today to do a little weeding but gave up quickly. Although the temperature was only high 70s it was too much for me. My body does not need it with no air conditioning in the house. We have had a lot of rain, some storms and so it's either too wet, or otherwise nasty out there. I have been trying to get some pictures in the evenings, when it is more shady.
Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-3068855363154596202019-07-16T17:52:00.000-04:002019-07-16T17:52:47.555-04:00Bugs and Butterfly...............FINALLY my Butterfly garden has visitors. I ventured outside against my better judgement. It's so hot. I am hoping it rains tonight. We had a good storm last night so I didn't put the sprinklers on today. It's so hot, in the high 80's today and into the 90s by weeks end. My Milkweed is really doing well and spreading, good news aye!.

They are spreading, I also have a "weed" garden by the road. I was going to pull it all out this year but there are so many bugs and Bees there that I hesitate to do so. Maybe when it cools down I will try to tame it down some. Meanwhile I am happy there are shady spots I can stand in and take pictures. I think what I will do is thin it out and then spread wildflower seeds for next year. I must get it looking a bit better than it does.

There were two battling Monarchs the last few days. It's funny but when I stand with my camera I swear they fly up to my face to see what I am doing. Maybe they are courting and wanting privacy?. They just seem curious.

Today another Butterfly showed up, I couldn't get a good picture but I am pretty sure it will be back. My camera froze again.

Some of the bugs today are probably pests but hey, they have to eat and wildflowers are allowed.

I know I don't want them on my Roses but still, they are pretty.

The scent of the Milkweed is like Lilac.I think tiny bugs live inside, aphids anyone?

There is also a pair of white butterfly that have been visiting since the very early Springtime and they have found the Milkweed now.

No great shots today. We did get the van back today so Gerry and me will go for a drive tomorrow maybe. Get out of the heat for awhile in the car haha. I think Gabby and Reina are babysitting tomorrow so most likely it will be just us for the dayJanice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-69520302384341146562019-07-11T18:58:00.000-04:002019-07-11T18:58:09.920-04:00Dog days...........after a cold Spring it has turned into a hot summer. Mid July and in the 90s. Too much for me, the garden is suffering. I can't keep up with the weeding. Its actually not so much weeds as the over zealous plants that spread. I have to thin out again. It's just too hot for me. I already got sunburn and I never burn. I am actually peeling.
So the garden is looking sad right now......a few pictures from the last couple of days.
I wish flowers would bloom longer. Today was down in the 60s but I was so tired from lack of sleep due to heat, I didn't get outside. I am almost afraid to go out these days, back in the 90s again tomorrow.
The Day lillies are starting to bloom.
I bought some ornaments and have put several other things out. Gerry is working on the porch so the side garden is a no go for this year unless I catch up in the Fall.
Well I guess that's it for now. Gardening is on the back burner, just hope we all survive the heat. Cold I can deal with, heat I can't........
I have been working out the front of house, the garden that is. Gerry picked up some of the fencing I need so I will try and get that in over the weekend.
I have been awaiting the blooming of the Iris. Finally they have "popped" I can see what colours I have now. I must pick up a few new ones.

Carrie's bird bath looks great now among the flowers. Soon the Bee Balm will bloom and with that in mind I bought one in a darker shade because the last few years only paler ones have shown up. Also soon the Daylilies will be blooming and I noticed I am missing a few of those. I saw some I could not resist when I stopped at Home Depot. So got a couple of new ones.

I love the other Iris, Dutch Iris that is. I have a few around but when I was in Suttons Bay the other day and saw a white and green Iris. If I ever see some of those I will have to get them.

In the back by the pond there is one yellow iris this year. It has spread but the others are not ready to flower yet. The pond however was quite prolific this year.

It did well this year. The one under the Mountain Ash got so tall it fell over so I must take pity and move it this Fall.

That area was all purple and white ones so I am not sure what happened. I must have planted this one a long time ago and now as the others have not bloomed, this one has it's chance.

I took loads of pictures but I think I will leave this post as the Iris and Daylilies for now. The shop hop tired me out haha. I will just show off my new Daylilies.
So looks like no freezer jam for me. Well Gerry anyway, too much sugar for me. It tastes so good though. In the garden things are also slow. At least in my garden. The Iris have buds but that's about it. Still it does seem that what there is will be more than last years crop. The water Iris is blooming well though........

It has been so wet I haven't been spending much time outside and there's so much to do. In between I did manage to sort out a garden when Vinca Vine had set in and I got most of it pulled before it took over. The Apple tree had no blossoms so far but the Azailia's are looking nice. They need trimming off dead bits but at the moment blooming nicely I have one under the Pines that I need to move into a space I cleared where the Ferns were.

The front garden is taking so long because so much died off. Then the things that spread are taking over. Just a few shots from around and about.

We gave up on the vegetables this year. We do have some tomato plants though. I have one out front but it's not doing so well, that will get moved with the others I think. I had to buy a couple of new pots as Gerry used mine for the tomatoes. I got those today, it was sunny when we went to Mennard's, then raining by lunch time so not getting done today. I bought a couple more grasses that I don't have. They are Perennial so I hope they will do well in pots. I don't want them to spread but don't want them to freeze either.

I am quite enjoying the ornamental grasses. I had put some in the garden and that was a mistake but at least they are now in a spot that I can salvage and pot knowing they like that spot.
The girls enjoyed the garden and Poodle paths yesterday between showers
Just a few more to finish off.......maybe tomorrow I can get something done. I sure hope so soon or it will be summer. With luck though a cooler one.
The rain is making things grow, and it's cool enough for me. Still that doesn't help if it's too wet to work.
Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-70103928336537099162019-06-08T17:04:00.002-04:002019-06-08T17:04:36.808-04:00Trimming and planting................I slept in this morning. The night before I got like 2 hours of sleep, just restless. Bodi was panting, so put the fan on, then she was snoring and I got pushed to the edge of the bed. I got up and had some warm milk and went back about 3am and maybe fell asleep around 4am. Then up at 6.30 to take Cooper to school............not a restful night. So now it's the weekend and I just lingered till I felt like getting up.
Then off into the garden............
I had Gerry dig up the overgrown section near the steps and today I put woodchips down.........

I must decide what I want to put there. Maybe nothing. For now too much else to think about. At least the brambles are gone. The lady who is living across the ally came over today. She makes those wonderful ornaments made from teapots etc. She took a tour of my garden. I showed her my one remaining thing that I have left from my efforts.

She made me enthusiastic about making more. I must get a move on haha. She says she does it for a living. Wow.
Well I would never do well enough to sell but I do enjoy doing it. So maybe after I get finished, if that ever happens I will have another go. I need to get to some yard sales. Thrift shops too.
I put the game board out and just have to get black and white stones for the game pieces.

I notice that the board has warped since being out there. Thats ok.
I see the Jack in the Pulpit has survived another year. Two were showing when I saw this one.

I need to buy some more pots and planters. The ornamental grass is growing back and needs to be pulled and planted. I need a pot so it is controlled. Brea always has something to say about everything.

My Bunny friend hangs out here too.

I think he likes that I allow the Dandylions to grow

There is so much I need to get done, at least most of the hard work is finished. Just a few things to plant and a few to dig and move but then it will just be weeding. The back is a jungle again since I have been working on the front. Ah well..................I suppose I have all summer. I want to go to Garden goods soon and get the Fairy I want for the front garden..........all mine are gone now. Sigh.....always something. Thats good though right?Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-7638780449574005272019-05-31T19:46:00.000-04:002019-05-31T19:46:26.117-04:00What a difference a week makes........Tomorrow is June 1st. The weather is still quite cool for this time of year. It goes up and down. From almost frost in the morning to 81 in the afternoon. I didn't do as much as I would have liked this week. Getting up to get Cooper to school is killing me, what a wuss. I don't know why I am so tired. Ah well.
Lets see, I went out to check on progress and took a few pictures. The Lilly of the Valley smell wonderful and the Wild Honeysuckle right next to it is overpowering.

It looks like Bella and Boots are recovering on the deck.
In the very back shade garden a few things are blooming. I have yet to dig them in but will do because they seem to like it where I put them.

The Ferns seem to have taken so I will get a few more later maybe. Meanwhile I need to put some dairy doo down. I looked at old pictures and it seems the Hosta used to get a lot bigger.
Meanwhile, out front the main garden is filling in and now I see where I can dig out some ferns. Maybe I will replace with Day lillies or Echinacea. I need to cut back the hedge to give more light and fertilize. I don't seem to have a lot of luck growing things. However you can see that my new bird bath is looking more at home now.
So far the blossom on the Apple tree is scarce.
Under the other side of the Apple tree is a mess of 3 shrubs and some white flowers, at the back and a mix of Yellow flowers and Asters.I made the mistake of putting in some Vinca Vine and I have to dig/pull that out to make the garden work.

Several other things around the front gardens. I like to have little pathways and hidden features around so here are a few.
The trees (Maple) have been really messy. I need to sweep everything and pull weeds between the paving stones on the patio. I have read of a few things to try and when that's done maybe some stones in between. Looks like it will be work all summer at this rate. I think the Chickadee babies are fledged as they are chattering up in the tree. They are flying but not yet expert, I almost got hit by one. That reminded me of the year one landed on my shoulder all out of breath. Its too wet today, too cold and wet yesterday. I can't do it if it's too hot or too humid. Today is wet AND buggy. I did a couple of things, little things that were on my list. I get ideas from Pinterest. Who doesn't these days. I have gone off magazines they are all advertising now. Soon there won't be any left in business. Times change.
I went out yesterday after the rain and took some pictures. Amazing what a good rain will do for the garden.
Two of my unique finds. A sifter bird house and an old wine rack with a cookie sheet top.

An old ash tray in pretty blue glass for the birds and my corner with all sorts of old things. An old mail box planter. Tool box and old cooler. An old chair with no seat, a plank of wood holds the wire basket that was filled with flowers. They have sort of wilted in the coldness and I will have to fix that again later.

Violets come up anywhere you allow them. I let them bloom because they are pretty and will move them to the back once they are done. The old step ladder holds some more goodies just because I can't throw stuff away.

I loved the old plate and so I can display it in the planter for now and the other serving dish is just deep enough with some stones for Butterfly and Bees to sip from. I have a couple of old kids Tonka trucks, one is very rusty and they bring back times when little boys played here. I sometimes put plants in the back of them. I am thinking of digging some hens and chicks to fill them with. Then this old fountain that no longer works just adds interest to this corner.

This old Tea Kettle holds a Hosta this year and the old table is useful here by the chairs. I have a collection going of old tools and stuff that hangs on the side of the shed. One day I will organize a proper display. Did have some plans till Gerry hung his ladder there. Sort of put me off but for now it can stay as it is until I figure things out, Somewhere to hang things till I decide. An old Milk churn, one of 3 that I have holds some interest and the old top off of a chimney stack makes a planter.

Why waste money taking stuff to the dump when you can decorate them haha.............
This old wagon we found in a field many years ago. The red Milk churn makes a corner bright. Then one of two old coal skuttles make planters as well

I guess I have 4 milk churns, these two unpainted. Three old wash tubs have had several uses over the years and are always handy. Right now I am awaiting inspiration as I can't afford any more plants at the moment. The old fountain does not hold water and so for this year is a planter. I have to figure out what to plant in this side garden. June I may be able to swing a few more plants so I have a few weeks to decide.

In the front side garden I am using an old base to hold a bowl that looks like a pretty bird bath. I have a bait can where the inside comes out and I will use those for planters when I get some annuals later and will hang on the old plough. The back of that side holds another old plough and an old chair with no seat, I have a plant sitting on that and my old wheel barrow that's all rusted. It had flowers in but really doesn't do well with dirt in it. Maybe when the rest of the fence is up I will put a box of flowers in it.

The remnants of an old stool holds a Butterfly bush from falling over. One of my remaining garden ornaments I made holds a ceramic watering can and glass ball. What I have been told is a Cricket cage (?) holds a Geranium this year and today I found a game board that I set on that table and will put some black and white stones in a wire basket for a game of checkers. On the porch is an old cupboard I picked up at the side of the road and use that for the mail. Then I have an Apple bucket someone painted to use as a container for plants. Everything has a use.

The old glass light globe becomes a gazing ball and some ceramic balls in a wire basket makes interest on top of the hose holder Isolde gave us. My garage hold loads of other things that will find a place at some point. Old colanders and plates etc. Old bird houses needing repair. Pots and planters, tool boxes and all sorts of other things that will become something at some point. Always something to do. Always new ideas. It all makes it fun. Then I think its all a mess and do something else.

I just hung an old rake head on a tree to hang things on, so that's another project.
I fear for the plants I have in now. I dare not get the annuals just yet. The beginning of the season is the end of May and it looks like this year that'll be about it too. Other years I have had everything in by now. I am enjoying time on Pinterest getting ideas, writing them down and hoping for the best. I did get the garage/shed sorted out and found my lost box of garden stuff just in time. Now I should know where everything is. I really want to go to the garden center and get more stuff but I daren't. There is so much left to do. The back is done for now until I catch up out front and that's a big job. I want to dig up all the ferns and plant them out back but it's too overwhelming right now. First I must weed before anything else. So today I got cracking at that chore......

Well I am 1/2 way now out front. With luck the rest tomorrow.
I did end up going to the garden center today. For the side I got two Boston Fern at 12/99ea

I have them on Shephers hooks in that entrance.
I got some ornamental grasses. I found this Japanese one, red and green. It's a Perennial so I do hope it comes up.

I really like the Lime green ones and so got a couple more of those to go in darker places. I also got a couple of Hosta and a couple of other things for the shade garden in the back.

I did get a couple of annuals for some colour but I really don't like to spend money on things that don't last.

The back shade garden has always been Hosta's but I have read that several other things like shade so I am experimenting this year. I bought some Ferns to see how they do, I also bought an Astilbe and a couple of other things. The Trillium like it as do some other wild flowers but they are over and done so quickly. When I get a chance I will transplant some of the Ferns from the front and Violets and Forget-me-nots. They can grow or not, up to them. I need to get them out of other gardens anyway.

I have bought Dairy Doo and Potting soil to help replenish things. What was the veggie garden last year is now plants and Herbs. It didn't have enough sun for the vegetables. I keep trying to fill up the gardens so I can stop buying stuff but it never seems to work. Some things just take over and others just do not flourish. My Hosta never get big unless they are in pots. Has to be the soil and too much shade.

I have seen a couple of Butterfly this year already and that's hopeful as I really didn't see many at all last year. I have put out plenty of water dishes. I put marbles in some so that Bees and Butterfly can use them. The birds have several Bird Baths now as well. The big fountain doesn't hold water anymore so this year I will put flowers in it. The side garden I made last year for veggies will go into flowers this year. I give up on growing Vegetables. Its too expensive. My Rhubarb did come up though and that will stay. I put two rose bushes in that I got for 5 dollars each so I hope they grow. Should be just enough sun for those. I noticed all my roses from last year have sprouts on then so at least they did survive the Winter.

I am really loving finding ideas on Pinterest for garden decorations. Rustic things. I need to finish the fence this year and have a plough, an old chair and the wheelbarrow in the back. I will finish that off once the fence is in. Maybe some yard sales will yield some more treasures this year. I would love some old wheels to put up by the fences out back. I love old boxes and Milk churns, that sort of thing. When the some comes out I will take pictures of how everything is right now. I have an abundance of treasures in the garage and now I can see what I am doing maybe I can come up with more good ideas. Too cold today though So I will sew instead. I need to get that out of the way so I can paint some garden signs. I have collected wood to do that. As well as some stone/pebble art. So many ideas, so little time. I need another pair of hands.
Things will look much better when things begin to bloom. Meanwhile, look what I found in the back garden.
More in a few days. Rain tomorrow. Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-69996712424486940342019-05-09T17:14:00.000-04:002019-05-09T17:14:14.390-04:00spring catch up...............The garden looks so bare and horrible this time of year. We got a good soaking rain last night. It made the leaves begin to show up.

The fern I bought yesterday

That will be planted at the back in my shade/wildflower garden. I am going to take out some ferns from out front and see if they will like it back there. I don't want them out front. some I will plant under the pine trees. I am also going to try Violets back there. Last year I had some in a pot and those did fine. Trouble is right now I can't see where the Hosta are. So I can't really do that until they show up. I am determined to fill that garden up this year with things I already have. Then just a few Perennials. Here are the guys I bought plus some that I over wintered.

This is my work area and the next job is to spread the dairy doo and top soil. It will be my potting area.

This spot does not do well because a certain little poodle sits there in the shade. SO I put in a stepping stone for her.

I also put in another poodle path out back. The corner that Gerry stripped nekid now has 5 shrubs but they will take ages to grow. I think meanwhile I will get another piece of trellis and make it more private. The wood chips are down in all the back areas that need it so just the front to do now.

Getting some ornaments out but have lost a whole box. Won't find that till Christmas unless I go through all the boxes before then. Ah well, a nice surprise when I find them.

My thrift store find (the bowl) turned into a bird bath. I have water dishes placed throughout the garden

src="https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/7nOYZQ.jpg" border="0">

Come summer the birds and beasts need baths and water to play in.The Bees and Butterfly love the shallow ones.
Out the front and side there is so much to do. I bought two roses for the side because they were only 5 dollars each

I put Isodes bears out the side on my stone garden. Loads of Petoskey Stones there

Years ago my friend Susan bought me a carved bear who is out there somewhere. The Forsythia survived Gerry's prune and I was able to stop him cutting that one out

I am trying to make the side a garden after being a playground for little boys with trucks. I got two roses to put in and will think of something else.I will put flowers in the fountain because it won't hold water.

The front side is a mess and will look better once the grass/weeds are pulled. Lots of weeding and transplanting to do. I will put Jasons bird bath there.

The front looks neglected and baron. Justin and Carrie sent me bird bath. I wanted one and could not wangle that into my budget. Then Jason called and bought one as well but different (see above). That should arrive soon and will go on the side there near the fence.

Primroses come up every year but without more they are sort of lonely. The Daffodils don't even have buds. I hope the dairy doo help everyone out there. I find it strange that they can grow wild in abundance but mine just die.
Probably need to transplant them over to a more sunny spot. I don't know. Anyway as you see there is so much to do it's not even funny.
Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-33058088725635054532019-03-28T16:49:00.001-04:002019-03-28T16:49:23.508-04:00Is it Spring Yet?...........It seemed pretty warm today, had to be in the 40s. We saw a Robin the other day. We tried to go for a walk down by Kids Creek but still too much snow. That's where we saw the Robin though, enough grass showing for his little beady eye to spot worms. I just can't wait to get back to walking. Although I will at least be walking Cooper to school.

So anyway, the snow is melting in my garden and now we can see patches of dirt and grass and all the mess that now needs to be cleaned up. Yeuk.

When you remember the snow was over the gate last week, it's quite a significant thaw.

The Poodles are loving being able to get out and yap at everyone.
As you see we didn't get much cleaned up in the Fall and so I need to get out and remedy that. I will start now so that I can just do a little at a time and not kill myself.

Bodi can't get down the steps at the moment without help so she sits and watches life go by from the deck. We will be putting in a handicap ramp for her this year.

Boots goes out every chance she gets but doesn't stay long, still too cold for her.

I try to keep Bessie inside. She lays on the bird feeder.
I went to check the pond, that needs some work for sure but both of the fish are there. They have to be about 5 years old now, if not more. There were 4, then a baby, and now just two. So sad.

I must get all those leaves out. There was a net over the pond but Gerry took it off. So now there are a lot of leaves in there. Can you see the Hosta popping up in the next picture? I just can't wait to get to the garden centers.

The driveway is all ice. That will have to be a priority, cleaning that mess up. Gerry is working for a couple of weeks so it will have to me lucky ol me.Never mind, it's outside work and must get done before it gets hot.Janice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-16007305885874017422019-01-31T15:11:00.000-05:002019-01-31T15:11:56.638-05:00Pileated........................Yesterday we braved the cold and storm to go get bird food from McGoughs. I forgot my camera darn it. We had blizzard white out conditions. I could have got some good shots. Ah well, if the roads clear up on Saturday maybe we can go for a drive. I want to see what the lakes look like. I have seen some good pictures of ice pancakes and I want to get some myself. That's if I can get Gerry out. I know it will be cold. We have not had school all this week and maybe none tomorrow again. We shall see.

I was surprised any of the stores were open yesterday but a few brave souls were in. We went to Tom's after to get bread and milk and I got extra bread for the birds. The Starlings like bread and the Blue Jays like the peanuts.

People chase the Starlings away, they have such a voracious appetite. They have to eat too so I feed them, I also chase them off just like the Squirrels when they over do it. Unfortunately they keep the small birds away.

Everyone is hungry. The Mourning Doves are not afraid of anyone and hold their ground.
Yesterday there were 3 of the Yellow Bellied Sap Suckers. It took a few whacks at the Starlings, it was not about to give up its spot at the feeder.
Today I went to the bathroom where I take my pictures just in time to see a Pileated Woodpecker at the feeder.
What a surprise that was, I backed up and grabbed the camera.
The garage door is always open to any who need it and the windows have broken panes in them.
The trees look so beautiful with a layer of brilliant white against the blue of the sky. I also love it against a grey stormy but sunny sky.
I was going to close this blog down but have decided against it. Too much of the same for one blog. I love to take pictures of the birds and so it would get boring with the same thing every day. So I will just accept the fact that sometimes one or other of the blogs will not be getting my full attention.
I am enjoying the snow this year after such a hot and humid summer but I am planning on what I want to do come Spring. That's it for todayJanice Kay Schaubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01218296462551967972noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8843348331490372231.post-64691932690537015252018-11-29T19:42:00.000-05:002018-11-29T19:42:10.754-05:00Blue Jay Afternoon...........Well there is just a dusting of snow, it sort of improves things. There are so many leaves still on the ground and looks now as though they will stay there. I guess that the ones on the garden may just decompose and be a good thing. The ones on grass can get mowed. No problem, except if he trys to use the snowblower haha. Ooops that may be a problem. Since he doesn't have to work, and the snowblower is on the blink I guess it won't matter.

I haven't seen the Possum (Apossum) in a few days now, I hope he's OK. I put Coopers pumpkin out back for he animals to eat and they have broken through into the seeds already. So anyhoo I did get the inside decorating done and the outside is sort of done. Can't say I am happy with it because I still don't have lights on the front porch. There are lights out back on the garage but when I look at what everyone else has done it's pretty pathetic. Out front I have two spindly lights and a sick deer.
The back deck looks sort of OK but maybe I can work on it now inside is done. Back to the Blue Jays. Today they really enjoyed the peanuts.
They were enjoying things until the Squirrels showed up. There were about five Blue Jays. I put out some water for them, they had been going down to the pond. There is chicken wire over the pond so hopefully they can't fall in. I noticed last year that the birds enjoy the pond in Winter.
Tomorrow, well we shall see.
Gerry took the Poodles out to pee and a wander around between showers. The snow was turned to rain/drizzle before getting back to snow as it got cold again. They enjoyed a stroll and a yap at passers by.
